Yes, I use the word 'Fallah' to denote the farmer, who tills the agricultural land in Egypt. Farmer, or agricultural labourer, perhaps favoured in developmental jargon, and amongst the 'politically correct' somehow doesn't do it. It doesn't convey the feeling that a 'fallah' (literally tiller of the land) harbours, regarding him/her self, a combined feeling of pride and ( yes, wise)
acceptance (or dare I once more offend political correctness by saying submission) vis a vis his/her vocation and its trials and achievements, small and great.
I have lived with the 'fallaheen' and work with them, proud to hail from a family in which the rural roots run strong. In the heart of the Delta, in Dakahliya, I see it there, a vibrant community, specifically amongst the younger generation. It is vibrant and promising, yet, embattled, sadly by restricted environments and their parent's eroding way of life.
